WHO Sounds Concern Over Acute Lack of Obesity Jabs

Under 10% of people eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its first advice on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to universal availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Even under the present most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The advice encourages governments and firms to widen availability, via approaches such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Operate

The injections mimick a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and boost satiety so users eat less.

Patients usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research suggests patients may see weight return within a year of discontinuing the treatment, because their usual hunger come back.

To be overweight or obese raises your likelihood for developing diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in every country and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
